Barbara Hepworth : Late Works 1970-75

Works in Date Order

In 1970 Hepworth Declared in 1970 “ I don’t think anyone realises how much the last 10 years has been a fulfilment of my youth … going back opens the door to brand new ideas”.

“Hepworth’s Late works are charaterised by a retrospective quality, with echoes of the geometric abstraction of the 1930’s in particular… Hepworth refused a specific form in the 1930’s : the three horizontal forms or ‘stones’ of the multipart bronze “Conversations with Magic Forms are all based on polyhedron in her works of 1934-5. The three standing forms relating to an alabaster group of the 1950’s).”

Her Late works included many carvings, multipart sculptures and large scale bronzes. She also continued a trend of casting earlier carvings, particularly those in wood, to preserve the form because of spoiling and cracking due to ageing. In her studio remain several unfinished sculptures including a plaster for a cast of Oval Sculpture Delos 1955, and a multipart marble sculpture with interlocking spheres.
